Tetchea was most populous in 1941, when the population recorded 3,524 inhabitants.

Since then migration to other parts of Romania or beyond its borders has left its mark on the town, with the most recent census in 2011 counting 3,141.

Of these 65% are Romanians, 22% are Roma, 9% ethnic Hungarians, and the restare of mixed ethnicity. However, unofficial data reveals that the number of Roma may be as high as 1,000 people, rather than the 700 as was counted in the census.
